About Our Dan Classing Examinations

I wanted to take a moment to explain our Dan examination process so that all of our students and parents have an understanding of what is involved and the expectations. The (black belt) or mid-night blue belt in Tang Soo Do used to be one of the most coveted goals of any martial artist. However, with the advent of "recreational karate" every other karate school seems to give this treasure out without regard to meaning. I have seen karate schools have their Dan examinations watered down to a 1-2 hour event where the only expectation is to demonstrate a few forms and combinations, break 1-2 boards and go home with a "black belt." This is of course after you pay your fee.
In my opinion with this kind of attitude and approach, the coveted mid-night blue belt has lost it's significance. Not so with the Independent Tang Soo Do Association and South Hills Karate Academy. We have a two day process where our Yu Dan Ja (Black Belt holders) and candidates get together over two days. We train together, learn new material, fight against each other and drill in techniques over four to five hours on day one. On day two, over another 5 hour period, we have our Yu Dan Ja and Candidates present their requirements, demonstrate technique including multiple board breaks and fight against each other to earn their Dan ranking. This entire process not only assures that the Candidates are deserving of their next ranking, but it also helps to build camaraderie that should last a lifetime.
Rank is not guaranteed! Failure to not excel at any portion of the testing results in the testing having to be done again before any promotion to Yu Dan Ja level. Our Dan ranking has meaning. Our Yu Dan Ja can walk away proud that the have earned their rank and the respect that goes along with being a true black belt!
