2013 Spring Dan Recertification

As the evening progressed Master Garbowsky and those in attendance also trained on the following traditional Tang Soo Do hyung:

  • Pyong Cho Dan
  • Pyong Sa Dan
  • Jindo (Chinto)
  • Naihanchi Ee Dan
  • Ro Hai
  • Naihanchi Sam Dan
  • Sip Soo and Kong Sang Koon Dae
Tang Soo Do Pittsburgh

Ee Dans also had an opportunity to briefly work on the advanced Chil Sung Oh Lo hyung while Sam Dans worked with Master Garbowsky on Sip Soo as well as Kong Sang Koon Dae. After a short break, Master Garbowsky taught Bunhae Ki Sul 分解  / 분해 기술 (application of technique) contained in the Chinto hyung.

Chinto Hyung
Master Garbowsky explained to the group that Chinto hyung included much more than just the basic blocks and strikes typically taught. Chinto contains a number of escapes from holdsjoint lockspractical take downs, and throwing techniques that are critical in traditional karate combative applications. Master Garbowsky went step-by-step through Chinto, going over the recorded fighting techniques contained in the hyung. The group then had an opportunity to practice the techniques one-on-one in a combative scenario.

Saturday, March 16th saw the Yu Dan Ja perform their requirements in front of Master Garbowsky and senior ITA Dans for advancement to their next Yu Dan Ja level as well as demonstrate practical applications from Chinto and other advanced Tang Soo Do hyung. The Recertification culminated with a portion of the day dedicated to Modern Arnis training. Master George Klinedinst from Hershey, PA came in and taught a two-hour training clinic, introducing the participants to the art of Arnis. Modern Arnis is the system of Filipino martial arts founded by the late Remy

Presas. It is derived principally from the traditional style of the Bolo (knife) and the stick-dueling art of Eskrima, with influences from other Filipino and Japanese martial arts. This clinic was included as part of the Yu Dan Ja’s weapon defense and application training.  It was open to South Hills Karate Academy Gup students as well, giving them an opportunity to train along-side the senior Dans.
